Spring Rain at Halsey Pond

We spent a cool and misty spring afternoon at Halsey Pond today for our Wacky Wednesday Walk, and were treated to swans and geese and puddles. On the way up the hill to the pond loop we spent some time learning about a poisonous plant that has been sprouting up all over the place with the warming weather. For three seasons out of the year I spend quite a bit of time pointing out poison ivy on the trails–it climbs {Read More}

From Seed to Sprout–Saturday on the Farm

Today was the second in our series of Spring Saturdays on the Farm at Fishkill Farms and the farm is really starting to come to life! We spent the morning learning about the all-important seed–that which is the beginning of almost everything at Fishkill Farms.  Before we started our seed and sprout adventures, we spent a bit of time down at the hen houses doing what the kids seem to love to do most–collect the eggs. I’ve said before that they {Read More}

The Outside World

One of my daughters, who asked that she remain anonymous, wrote this poem yesterday and read it aloud to me. It was beautiful, but not super-warm, just perfectly springy. No one was wearing boots as {Read More}

Hillside Woods Ramble

It’s our first Wacky Wednesday of April and for the sake of posterity I must mention that we’ve got a record-breaking 91-degrees on the thermometer in Central Park this afternoon. I also must mention that this kind of freaks me out. In any case, we spent a lovely afternoon in Hillside Woods in Hastings today, though it did feel strange to be hiking in July-like heat while looking at the naked trees of early spring. I learned of Hillside Woods {Read More}

Vernal Pools at Muscoot

Our spring break has been pretty soggy as we’ve had two solid days of cold rain and drizzle thus far. Thankfully we were greeted by some drier weather this morning for our Wacky Wednesday vacation hike to visit the vernal pools at Muscoot Farm–and the days of rain left us with lots of mud and puddles in which to splooge and splash. In fact, the farm’s ducks were treated to a little pond as their barnyard play area was so {Read More}
